Our optics & photonics research

The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) has carried out research and teaching in optical science and technology dating back to the early 1970s when Prof. Charles Kao joined CUHK and was Founding Chairman of the Department of Electronics. Professor Charles Kao served as the Vice Chancellor of CUHK in 1987–1996. His pioneering works on the use of optical fibers for telecommunications won many international awards including the Japan Prize in the field of engineering in 1997, the Ericsson prize, the Marconi Award, and the Nobel Prize in Physics in 2009. Nowadays, CUHK has the most prominent research groups in photonics and optical sciences in Hong Kong, with over 20 world-renowned researchers and faculty members from Departments of Electronic Engineering, Information Engineering, Mechanical and Automation Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, and Physics working in advanced photonics and optical sciences research under the auspices of the Institute of Optical Science and Technology. Our research covers many different areas and applications, including optical communications, biophotonic sensing and imaging, silicon photonic circuits and devices, quantum information processing, plasmonics and the interaction of light with atomically thin two-dimensional materials.

Our collaboration with the mainland

Over the years, CUHK has developed longstanding partnerships with various esteemed universities and research institutions in mainland China. Recently, CUHK has seized opportunities arising from the Belt and Road Initiative and the transformative development of the Greater Bay Area (GBA), thereby strengthening its collaborations with mainland institutions. These collaborations between CUHK and mainland institutions take diverse forms, including joint research units, advanced research institutes, joint research funds, as well as student exchange and interflow programs. Moreover, these long-standing collaborations have played an important role in cultivating numerous talented individuals who transcend borders, contributing significantly to both academia and industry. This workshop aims to further foster our existing collaborations, explore new opportunities to work together on frontier research in optics and photonics, and establish a new initiative in jointly cultivating next-generation young talents in optics & photonics fields. In 2023, we held our first workshop in this form with great success at the Chinese University of Hong Kong in Hong Kong.
